My large 30" x 48" mixed media collage, titled "Franklin," celebrates the groundbreaking scientist Rosalind Franklin and has been selected by a juried panel to be included in the "Looking Forward" exhibit at the Atlanta Artists Center in Buckhead @ 2979 Grandview Ave. NE, Atlanta.
The show runs from September 17 - October 31, 2024.
This piece is part of my "Trailblazer Collection," which honors the lives and achievements of visionary women like Rosalind Franklin, Katherine Johnson, and Madame Curie. These collages are meant to be bright, yet decayed, frenetic and moody. The dripping and sprayed paint, the layering of content, and broad paint strokes are meant to convey the hardship, struggle and determination of these ladies to overcome racial and gender biases in their fields. The neon colors represent the brilliance of each woman and their world changing ideas and contributions.

Rosalind Franklin
Franklin's pioneering use of X-Ray Crystallography led to the discovery of the DNA double-helix structure. However, her critical work was stolen by Watson and Crick, who went on to win the Nobel Prize, while Franklin received no recognition or awards for her groundbreaking contribution. Her story is a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by women in science, and this work celebrates her indomitable spirit and lasting legacy, inspiring generations of women to follow their passions despite the obstacles.
